My Tesla Charger Failed After 5 Years

RED LIGHT OF DEATH!
Fortunately this was a rather easy out-of-warranty "repair"-- but it still cost me $300+!
I still have a referral HPWC in a box in my basement. I have been thinking about installing in the outside corner of my garage (by the main panel) since it has turned out to be SO RARE that the car is parked on the other side of the garage and by putting the outlet in the middle I think I get my daily steps in primarily walking to/from the chargeport.

My car also has dual chargers, so I could conceivably dump a lot more power in that way. I considered attaching a pigtail to the HPWC and just skipping a new UMC altogether, but we really do use it on a few trips/year (nonpandemic) so I still need to pursue getting the 110 adaptor for it from the SC.

If you buy a new UMC online in Tesla's shop, you get the 5-15 adapter with the bundle for $275, then pay $35 to get 14-50 = $310.

I bought mine at the Service Center, just the charger (no bag/adapter) for $250, plus $35 for 14-50 = $285. BUT I STILL NEED the 5-15 adapter, so in the end... if that's ALSO $35 and I would have been better off ordering from the website.

Yeah, yeah, it's my fault for not realizing there was no 5-15 in the bag until that night at home, but still-- it's the principle of the thing. Why is getting less potentially costing more?

As for the old UMC, I've sold it to a guy in the Ukraine -- he's salvaging the cord portion to splice into a charger so he has a Tesla plug on it.

The adapters are also not compatible with the new UMC, so they're on eBay with one already sold.

This was my 2nd 1st Gen UMC (first was replaced under warranty), so I'm hoping for better luck with the 2nd Gen. And since it's "rated" for 32amp, I went ahead an nudged my charge rate up to that with the presumption it actually *WILL* be more reliable.

Just 12,000 more miles to go until I cross the "Line of Vindication" on skipping the extended warranty.

Here's a YouTube version of the video in case you could not see it above:
